Hunting is a great ways to enjoy the outdoors, but safety must always be a priority.  In a sport that includes firearms, wildlife, changing weather, and navigational challenges, it is important to have skills to ensure your safety and the safety of your hunting partners.

Hunter safety courses will likely cover everything from basic survival skills, to gun safety.  It is important to treat every weapon as if it is a loaded weapon, and to know the safest carrying methods.  Also making sure that your muzzle is pointed in a safe direction at all times is critical to a safe hunting trip.

Every state has their own hunter safety courses, and many require a course to be eligible to get a hunting license.  It is important to attend a course in your state because they will highlight different scenarios you may encounter, as well as the laws specific to hunting in your area.

Nevada’s course, put together by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), requires an independent study portion, in addition to course conducted in a classroom setting. The independent study portion can be completed with a workbook you can pick up from any NDOW office, or online through one of their hunter education website partners.  The in class portion is a minimum of 8 hour, and has with a written and practical exam at the end of the course.
